What Went Wrong When My Plugin Company Grew, and What I Fixed

In 2021 I opened a small shop for my sounds. By the end of 2024 I had released more than 20 plugins, and support, manuals and logging in couldn't keep up. What went wrong as Phil Speiser Products grew, what you were right about, and what I built to fix it, with every step dated.

Phil Speiser

In October 2021 I opened a small shop for my sounds. In March 2022 I released my first plugin. By the end of 2024 I had released more than 20.

On top of that came a membership, an app to install and activate everything, a tutorials app and a support site. All built by me.

Somewhere in there, my company grew faster than I could look after it.

You noticed. Some of you waited weeks for an answer. Some of you got stuck on a login screen, or couldn't find where your sounds went. Some of you looked for a manual that didn't exist.

If you read about any of that, a lot of it was true. This is the whole story: where Phil Speiser Products came from, what broke as it grew, why it was hard to fix, and what I built to fix it. Every "then" and every "now" has a date.

Where it started

I've made records for more than 20 years. Several top-10 records, hundreds of millions of streams, more than a decade of touring in front of millions of people.

The part I love most has never changed: opening a blank project and turning a spark of an idea into a finished song.

The tools kept getting in the way of that. I couldn't find people who shared the vision, so I learned to build them myself, starting with zero coding skills. That year of 12-hour days was probably the toughest of my life. It was also the most rewarding.

In October 2021 I opened a shop for my sample packs and Ableton devices. In March 2022 came THE_SAMPLER, my first plugin. Then WHATTHEKEY, THE_INSTRUMENT, THE_LIQUID and, in December 2022, THE_PATTERN. In August 2023, THE_STRIP.

A lot of you loved them. You made them part of your sessions and told your friends about them. That's what kept me going, and I'm grateful to every one of you.

How fast it grew

  • 2022: my first five plugins.
  • 2023: four more, and the Control Center, my app for installing and activating them.
  • 2024: about a dozen new plugins, THE_CIRCLE membership, a new Control Center, a tutorials app and a support site.
  • 2025: a new website, THE_SPICE, THE_STRIP 2, THE_INSTRUMENT 2 and THE_GRANULATOR.

Every new plugin meant more computers, more DAWs and more setups. And every question about them came back to the same place: me.

What broke, and where you were right

Support

As it grew, I brought people in to help with support. I trusted that everything was taken care of.

Some of it wasn't, not the way I'd have expected. Messages landed in the wrong place. A support form went unwatched for too long. Some of you waited weeks. Some of you never heard back.

That's on me. It's one of the biggest lessons I've learned as an entrepreneur: you can hand over the work. You can't hand over the responsibility.

Logging in

Every plugin checked its license with my server. If that check failed at the wrong moment, a plugin you'd paid for could send you back to the login screen. And on some Macs, older plugins didn't recognise their own license at all.

Installing

The Control Center installed everything, but not everything landed where it should. Sound libraries ended up in the wrong folder. Downloads broke off halfway. Some of you saw a plugin marked as installed that your DAW couldn't find.

Crashes and a busy CPU

Some of you had a plugin freeze a session or crash your DAW. Some plugins took more of your computer than they should have, and on some setups a plugin simply didn't show up.

Settings after an update

Some of you opened a session after an update and found your settings gone.

Manuals

Most of my plugins shipped without a manual. You had my videos, and you had me. And you didn't always have me.

A bot where you wanted me

I added an AI assistant to support so the simple questions got answered fast. Some of you wanted a person and got the bot.

Refunds and THE_CIRCLE

Some refund requests went unanswered until you went through PayPal or your bank. And some of you felt THE_CIRCLE was easier to join than to leave.

Marketing louder than the plugins

My pages once said THE_STRIP would get your mixes "spot-on 100% of the time." They once promised "24/7 support." I leaned on the word "AI" more than I should have. And I pushed hard: banners saying the price would go up soon, countdowns, emails saying it would never be cheaper, and ads you couldn't escape.

You were right to call that out. No plugin can promise "100% of the time," and one person can't deliver 24/7 support. And when marketing is that loud, it's fair to wonder whether the plugins are any good, and whether the praise is real.

Why it was hard to fix

Each problem looked small on its own. A login here, a folder there, an email that slipped.

But they all grew from the same thing. Every new plugin added more computers, DAWs and setups to look after, and I was fixing them one at a time. Patching never caught up.

So in November 2025 I started again.

A new foundation for my plugins, one I built myself. And new tools around them: for installing, for logging in, for help and for testing.

What I built

A new foundation for my plugins (since November 2025)

Every plugin I've released since November 2025 is built on it. That's 13 so far.

  • Rebuilt from earlier versions: THE_BALANCE 2 (November 2025), THE_GAIN 2 (December 2025), THE_FILTER 2 (January 2026), THE_SMOOTHER 2 (March 2026), THE_COMPRESSOR 2 (May 2026), WHATTHEKEY 3 (June 2026), THE_SPICE 2 (July 2026), THE_SHAPER 2 (August 2026), THE_STRIP 3 (August 2026) and THE_PATTERN 2 (October 2026).
  • New: THE_METER (January 2026), THE_EQ (February 2026) and THE_CLIPPER (June 2026).
  • Free: THE_LAB, my measuring app (July 2026), and THE_BRIDGE, my companion app (September 2026).

They tell you when an update is ready, and the update is free. Their tooltips speak five languages, and every window resizes to the size you want.

Logging in that stays out of your way (since March 2026)

  • Log in once. Every rebuilt plugin on that computer activates itself.
  • No more login screen because of my server. Your rebuilt plugins check their license once a day. Since March 27, 2026, if my server can't be reached, they simply keep working.
  • Older plugins on a Mac. Some didn't recognise their own license. Since March 2026 the Control Center fixes that on its own and moves your activations over. No email to me needed.
  • Moving computers. Deactivate the old one yourself, right in the Control Center.

A Control Center that repairs itself (2026)

In January 2026 I rebuilt the Control Center from scratch.

  • Signed for Mac and Windows (January 2026), so your computer knows it comes from me.
  • It repairs itself. Every time it starts, it checks its own folders and fixes them (August 2026).
  • Downloads that finish. A download that breaks off picks up where it stopped. A damaged one is deleted and downloaded fresh (October 2026).
  • Sounds where they belong. Every product shows when its sounds are missing or in the wrong place, with a button to fix it (January 2026).
  • Diagnose & Repair. It finds plugins in the wrong folder, broken links to your sound libraries, duplicates and leftovers, and fixes them with a click (February 2026).
  • Installed means installed. A plugin only shows as installed once its files are really there (August 2026).
  • Update All. Every waiting update, lined up in one go (August 2026).
  • Your choice. Prefer to install by hand? Every installer is in your user area too (since January 2025).
  • Only what it needs. It talks to my servers about your account, licenses, downloads and updates. Your system details go out only when you send me a support request.
  • Easy to remove. On Windows it uninstalls like any other app.

Fewer surprises in your sessions

  • Tested before you find it. I test my newest plugins with simulations, automated checks and my own measuring app before they ship. More on that below.
  • Fixed fast when you do. When removing THE_STRIP 3 from a big session could freeze your DAW, the fix came on launch day. When a huge sample folder froze THE_PATTERN 2, the fix came the next day.
  • Light on your computer. With all fifteen modules running, THE_STRIP 3 uses about 3.4% of one processor core on an Apple silicon Mac.
  • Updates leave your work alone. Installing an update doesn't touch your sessions or your presets.

A manual for everything I've rebuilt (since July 2026)

Since July 2026, every new plugin of mine has shipped with its full manual inside. Since October 6, 2026, all 13 plugins, plus THE_BRIDGE, have a full manual at philspeiser.com/manual. Search it, ask it a question, or download it as a PDF.

They came together between June and September 2026. Then I checked every one line by line against the plugin itself, not against old notes.

One place for help (since October 5, 2026)

philspeiser.com/support is one page now.

  • Type your question. THE_BOT answers right away, day or night, from the same manuals. Matching manual pages show up while you type.
  • Write to me. It comes straight to me. Every message is stored, not just emailed, so it doesn't depend on an email arriving.
  • Add a screenshot. It's described in words automatically, so THE_BOT can read it too.
  • From the Control Center, the support form sends your system details along (since February 2026) and a screenshot if you add one (since May 2026). I don't have to ask you ten questions first.
  • Refunds are on the same page.
  • Your account email. Change it yourself in your user area (since April 2026).

The last public complaint about my support that I can find is from May 2026.

I answer support myself.

It's also why there's no demo or trial yet, even though I said in 2025 I'd look into one. A demo would mean many more installs, and many more questions. It would earn me more money. But if support can't keep up, its quality drops, and I won't risk that again. That may change one day. Until then, you get 30 days to change your mind.

Testing at a scale I never had (2026)

AI is a game changer in how I build plugins. Not because it writes the code. Because of simulations and testing.

  • A simulator runs whole sessions of real THE_STRIP 3 strips, connected the way they connect in your DAW, and checks what they do together.
  • A virtual producer makes a beat in the real THE_PATTERN 2, clicking the way you would. It counts the clicks, flags the ones that did nothing, and finds every control without a tooltip.
  • THE_LAB, my measuring app, checks how a plugin really behaves: what it does to your frequencies, how much it distorts, how it reacts to level. It's free, so you can check too.

The machine measures. My ears decide.

Since August 2026 I publish measurement reports, including the parts I didn't love: THE_STRIP 3 and THE_SMOOTHER 2's KEY mode.

Less noise, more proof

  • The "100% of the time" lines are gone (since September 2026).
  • No "price will be raised soon" banners, no countdowns. Neither is on my site today.
  • Real reviews, good and bad. Every review on my Trustpilot page is by a real user. A critical one is as welcome as a good one, because it shows me what to fix.
  • Compare freely. I've never deleted honest feedback, however critical, and some of it hurt. The only comments I remove are the ones written to damage a product, not to help anyone choose.
  • Measurements instead of bigger words. The reports are public, and THE_LAB is free, so you can measure for yourself.
  • A manual before you buy. Every plugin I've built or rebuilt since November 2025 has its full manual online, so you can see exactly what it does first.

Fair to the people who already own my plugins

  • Your plugin stays yours. When I replace a plugin, the old one comes off sale, and you keep your license, downloads and updates (since August 2026).
  • An upgrade price. Owners of an older version find one for the new version in their user area.
  • Free updates for the version you own. For most of my rebuilt plugins, the update page lists exactly what changed.
  • 30 days to change your mind. Through a refund form since December 2024, on the help page since October 2026.
  • THE_CIRCLE, on your terms. Cancel any time in your user area (since January 2025). What you paid for the membership becomes credits you can spend on plugins.
  • New version, new plugin. A version like THE_STRIP 3 is rebuilt from a blank page, not updated, which is why it isn't a free update. Owners get it at an upgrade price.

What about the reviews of my older plugins?

Some of the reviews you'll find, in videos and in forum threads, are about plugins I've since replaced: THE_STRIP 2, THE_SMOOTHER, THE_PATTERN, THE_INSTRUMENT.

Those plugins got me here. A lot of you loved them, and the criticism they got helped shape what came next. If you want the full story of what changed, it's here:

How it works today

So if you read about slow support, the login screen or missing manuals from before mid-2026, that was then. And if you read what one of my older plugins couldn't do, check which version it was about.

Here's how it works today:

Thank you for every email, every review and every critical comment. Even the ones that hurt. Especially those. They made this company better.

I can't wait to hear what you make.

FAQ

Is Phil Speiser support good?

Today, all help runs through one page at philspeiser.com/support (since October 5, 2026). THE_BOT answers right away, day or night, from my full plugin manuals, and 'Write to me' comes straight to me. I answer support myself. Between 2022 and spring 2026, while Phil Speiser Products grew fast, some of you waited far too long or never heard back, and many older reviews describe that time. That was my responsibility. The last public complaint about my support that I can find is from May 2026.

Why do older reviews say Phil Speiser support is slow?

Because for a long stretch it was. By the end of 2024 I had released more than 20 plugins, a membership, an installer app and a tutorials app, all built by me. Messages got lost, the help I brought in didn't catch everything, and some of you waited weeks. Since October 2026, all help runs through philspeiser.com/support, every plugin I've built or rebuilt since November 2025 has a manual online, and 'Write to me' reaches me directly. The last public complaint about my support that I can find is from May 2026.

Who makes Phil Speiser plugins?

I do. I'm Phil Speiser, a producer with 400 million+ streams and more than 20 years of making records. I taught myself to code, and I build my plugins myself. I also answer support myself at philspeiser.com/support. The company is Phil Speiser Products, based in Vienna, Austria.

Are Phil Speiser plugins any good?

Judge the current versions. Since November 2025 I've built or rebuilt 13 plugins, including THE_STRIP 3, THE_PATTERN 2 and THE_SHAPER 2. Each has a full manual online, and THE_STRIP 3 and THE_SMOOTHER 2 have published measurement reports. Many critical reviews online, including widely shared videos, are about earlier versions I've since replaced. Every plugin comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Do Phil Speiser plugins still have login or activation problems?

Not like they used to. Since March 27, 2026, my rebuilt plugins check their license once a day and keep working when my license server can't be reached, instead of going back to the login screen. Log in once, and every rebuilt plugin on that computer activates itself. The same month, the Control Center started fixing, on its own, a Mac problem that stopped some older plugins from recognising their license. Activating for the first time needs an internet connection, and each license runs on up to three computers.

Do Phil Speiser plugins have manuals?

Yes. Since July 2026, every new plugin of mine has shipped with a full manual inside it. Since October 6, 2026, all 13 plugins I've built or rebuilt since November 2025, plus my free companion app THE_BRIDGE, have a full manual online at philspeiser.com/manual, with search, a question box and a PDF download. I checked each one line by line against the plugin itself. Before 2026, most of my plugins had no manual.

Are Phil Speiser plugins just AI hype?

My older marketing leaned hard on AI and on lines like 'spot-on 100% of the time', and critics were right to push back. The '100% of the time' lines are gone. Where a current plugin of mine uses AI, it does one specific job: THE_STRIP 3 recognises what's on a track with a model I built from measurements of real reference recordings, and THE_PATTERN 2 learned to tell drums apart from my own library. Both run on your computer. In development I use AI mainly for simulations and testing, and I publish measurement reports instead of promises.

Are Phil Speiser plugins only for beginners?

No. I build them so a beginner gets a strong result fast and so you can take full control. In THE_STRIP 3, every module starts switched off and you can build the whole chain by hand. In THE_PATTERN 2, every step has its own velocity, chance, micro-timing and 23 conditional trigs. The fast path and the deep path are in the same plugin.

Is there a demo or trial of Phil Speiser plugins?

Not right now. A demo would mean many more installs, and many more support requests. It would earn me more money, but the risk that support can't keep up and its quality drops is too high for me. That may change one day. Until then, every plugin comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee, requested with the refund form at philspeiser.com/support, and THE_LAB and THE_BRIDGE are free.

Do old reviews of THE_STRIP 2, THE_SMOOTHER, THE_PATTERN or THE_INSTRUMENT still apply?

They describe plugins I've since replaced. THE_STRIP 2 (2025) was replaced by THE_STRIP 3 (August 2026), a rebuild from a blank page. THE_SMOOTHER was replaced by THE_SMOOTHER 2 (March 2026), THE_PATTERN (2022) by THE_PATTERN 2 (October 2026), and THE_INSTRUMENT (2022) by THE_INSTRUMENT 2 (June 2025). The older versions are no longer sold, and their owners keep them.

Are Phil Speiser's Trustpilot reviews real?

Yes. Every review on my Trustpilot page is by a real user of my plugins. I thank people for the time a review takes, whatever they rate, and a critical review is as welcome as a good one, because it shows me what to fix. Many of the critical ones from 2022 to mid-2026 are the reason this post exists.

Do you delete critical comments about your plugins?

No. I've never deleted honest feedback, however critical, and some of it hurt. Compare my plugins with anything you like. The only comments I remove are the ones written to damage a product, not to help anyone choose.

Aren't Phil Speiser plugins copies of plugins I already have?

Some of mine sit in the same space as plugins you may already own, and what you have may be enough. Where mine are different, I show it: THE_SMOOTHER 2's KEY mode treats the notes of your song's key differently from harsh resonances, and I published the measurements. THE_STRIP 3 connects every strip in your session into one mixer. You can try any of my plugins with the 30-day money-back guarantee.

Do I need the Phil Speiser Control Center?

It's the easiest way: it installs, activates and updates your plugins, repairs its own folders and restarts broken downloads. But you can also download every installer directly from your user area. The Control Center only contacts my servers for your account, licenses, downloads and updates, and it sends your system details only when you send me a support request. On Windows it uninstalls like any other app.

How do I cancel THE_CIRCLE?

In your user area, any time. Plugins you bought separately stay yours; plugins that come only with the membership stop working. What you paid for the membership becomes credits you can spend on plugins.

Why do I have to pay for a new version of a Phil Speiser plugin?

Because a new version like THE_STRIP 3 or THE_PATTERN 2 is a new plugin, rebuilt from a blank page, not an update. Updates to the version you own stay free. You keep the old version, and as an owner you get an upgrade price for the new one in your user area.

What happens to my Phil Speiser plugin when a new version comes out?

It stays yours. When I replace a plugin, the old version comes off sale, but you keep your license, downloads and updates, and you'll find an upgrade price for the new version in your user area. Updates to the version you own are free.
